History

Mile Hi Ceramics, Inc. was started by Donna J. Pool in 1952, when she began making clay earrings for resale. She worked from her home in Denver and in 1954 moved to a log cabin in Glenwood Springs, Colorado with small children at her feet. Soon, her expertise was sought after and she began teaching. Teaching was a great love of Donna's and many of her students have become exemplary teachers in the ceramic field.

Donna and her husband, Easy, moved their family and business to Denver in 1955 opening a basement business with the first store front opening in 1957. Schools, hospitals, recreation centers, senior centers, military facilities, and businesses requested classes from Donna and ceramic publications printed numerous articles from Donna's collection of techniques. Her endeavors have been nationally recognized.

Easy Pool watched his talented wife with admiration and a keen business aptitude quick on her heels. A Ceramichrome distributorship was acquired in 1958 followed by Skutt Kilns, Kemper Tools, 30 Mold companies, and numerous other well known ceramic/pottery manufacturers. Large scale clay production began in 1970.  Easy and his son, Zack, built our current Clay Operation in 1989.

Zack Pool, Donna & Easy's only son, now spearheads Mile Hi Ceramics, Inc. Playing with clay all of his life, and participating as an integral part of Mile Hi since 1972, Zack provides a wide knowledge base and enthusiasm that successfully leads Mile Hi. Pam Wayman, Donna & Easy's oldest daughter has a degree in Deaf Education & Elementary Education, is a Ceramic Artist, Duncan Ambassador, and coordinates Mile Hi's Education Program. She is the author of this web site, product catalog, company newsletter and acts as advertising manager. Lynn Williams, youngest daughter, is also an owner.
